About

Inspired by an undergraduate film class in Italian Neo-Realism, John embraced the realist tradition of telling stories of the “everyday” through a cinematic lens.

His imagery has been informed by his 2–year service with the U.S. Peace Corps in the farming communities of post-Soviet Central Asia, and by his long-term residence in Jerusalem, Israel, where he studied for a Master’s Degree at the Hebrew University while shooting for the Jerusalem Post and working on personal photographic and video projects.

Living in parts of the world undergoing periods of economic and political upheaval, and inspired by the human connections made within those culturally diverse communities, John began to see the other as something not so different from the self. Lines between geography, religion, and economics are blurred within John’s camera lens. His images relate the beauty of the human story, highlighting the union between us all – between conflicting communities, between photographer and subject, and between subject and viewer.

Since moving to NYC, John has had the opportunity to work on a number of feature film sets; working with actors, interviewing film directors and directing video - in addition to shooting commissioned work in Africa and Indonesia.

Whether shooting in a studio in NYC or on a dusty road in a village in Kyrgyzstan, John uniquely sees the external, the innate physical beauty of every subject while capturing the internal, the inner narrative of each character.

I could make a film in front of a wall if I knew how to find the data of man's true humanity and how to express it. - Luchino Visconti
