THE MOOR
The Story
The Moor is a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s, Othello, using language spoken by the play’s antagonist, Iago, to create a visual narrative set in New York City during a global pandemic.
The duplicitous Iago seeks revenge against the moor, Othello, suspecting Othello has slept with his wife. Additionally ambitious for more power, Iago foments a plan to exploit Othello’s jealousy and his most glaring vulnerability - his insecurities with his relationship with his wife, Desdemona - provoking the moor to destroy himself through violence and delusion and ultimately leading to all of their destructions.
The Moor is a collaboration between filmmaker, John Romano, and actor, Joshua Ari Mallin, with music by Gbatokai Dakinah.
The Soliloquies
Shakespeare employed the soliloquy to provide the audience with an intimate lens into the speaker’s thoughts. alone on stage, the character could speak freely to themselves, the audience, or the gods to divulge their most inner secrets.
Iago’s soliloquies feature language that elucidates his plan for revenge and the securement of more power by manipulating Othello into believing Desdemona’s infidelity.
